Election Commission confirms 91 polling stations with ballot shortages

The National Election Commission said that there were 91 polling places nationwide that ran short of ballots on the main voting day of the June 3 local elections. This is 41 more than the 50 places announced on the 5th. The NEC explained that there were 140 polling places where additional ballots were distributed in anticipation of a shortage, and that actual shortages occurred at 91 of them. The number of places where voting was temporarily suspended and then resumed was tallied at 26. By region, 22 cases were confirmed in Seoul alone, including Songpagu and Gangnamgu, and shortages were also reported in places such as Bukgu in Busan, Donggu in Daegu, Yeonsugu in Incheon, and Gimpo in Gyeonggi. The total number of ballots short nationwide on election day was 4,726, and since this figure is based on 50 locations, the actual scale could be larger. In addition, at a polling place in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province, voting was delayed after the names of more than 1,000 voters were omitted during the printing process for the voter roll. The NEC decided to operate a factfinding committee made up of six outside members, and with acceptance of Chairman Noh Taeak's intention to resign, standing commissioner Wi Cheolhwan will serve as acting head.
