Amid continuing controversy over the shortage of ballot papers by the National Election Commission, President Lee Jaemyung has called for a swift factfinding and institutional reform. The issue is spreading beyond the NEC's administrative incompetence to fuel the expansion of election fraud conspiracy theories.
On the 7th, President Lee requested that the National Assembly quickly pursue a parliamentary investigation and discuss reforms to the NEC system, and instructed the prosecution and police to uncover who is responsible for the incident and reveal the full extent of what happened. The government is also considering forming a joint investigation headquarters and has begun working on measures to prevent a recurrence.
In the Olympic Park area of Songpa District, Seoul, protests demanding a byelection and the dismantling of the NEC continued for a third day. Experts pointed to the NEC's poor administration as the core of the controversy, and said that permanent monitoring mechanisms, such as an independent audit body with outside members, are needed.
