Three-way race for Gyeonggi Governor, candidates from the Democratic Party face off

The three-way race in the Gyeonggi Province governor election, a showdown between candidates from the Democratic Party, has begun. Quickly check the political ties and sparring among Choo Mi-ae, Yang Hyang-ja, and Cho Eung-cheon.

The threeway race has been set in the June 3 Gyeonggi Province governor election, with candidates from the Democratic Party of Korea, the People Power Party, and the New Reform Party facing off. In particular, Democratic Party candidate Choo Miae, People Power Party candidate Yang Hyangja, and New Reform Party candidate Cho Eungcheon are drawing attention because all three previously belonged to the Democratic Party. Yang was recruited by the Democratic Party in 2016 and strategically nominated for Gwangju Seogu Eul, after which she served as a Supreme Council member and as the National Women’s Committee chair. After being elected in the 2020 general election, she left the party and moved to the People Power Party. Cho also served as a lawmaker under the Democratic Party, but left the party after internal conflict and moved to the New Reform Party. During the election campaign, sparring also continued over the candidates’ past ties and political choices. Choo criticized the two for leaving the party, and Cho strongly pushed back. Yang also criticized Choo, and the war of words among the candidates continued.
