Development speed that cannot keep up with the discussion of AI safeguards

Researchers warn that the speed of technology is outpacing control amid controversy over AI safety. We cover the key points, from risks beyond human control to the industry's response.

As artificial intelligence (AI) technology advances rapidly, concerns are growing that safety and control mechanisms are failing to keep pace. Kyunghyang Shinmun examined the possibility that AI could escape human control and the industry's response to it, through Korea's young AI researchers. According to the article, researchers are experiencing firsthand the flood of hundreds of AI papers a day and the rapidly changing technological trends. Recently, there have also been more cases in which AI assists with or carries out the research process itself, and the use of AI is spreading in paper writing and peer review as well. Some academic societies have even introduced measures to check whether AI has been used. Researchers pointed out as risk factors that it is difficult to fully explain AI's internal operating principles, and that it may exhibit unexpected behavior during the learning process. However, opinions were divided on whether it is actually at a level that could immediately destroy humanity, and there was broad agreement that safety verification and social discussion are more important than excessive fear.
