Visiting the Academy of Forensic Science: How Physical Evidence “Speaks”

Shanghai, July 29 — Reporters recently joined an overseasrelated rule of law themed interview activity organized by the Ministry of Justice and visited the Academy of Forensic Science to learn how this institution uses science and technology to restore the truth of facts through material evidence. The report said that the Academy of Forensic Science has long been engaged in difficult and complex forensic identification work, with services covering document examination, forensic material evidence, environmental damage, and many other fields, and it also participates in the formulation of national standards and industry standards. In recent years, the academy has achieved a number of results in document examination, DNA identification, and species identification, providing technical support for judicial fairness and the development of overseasrelated rule of law. The article mentioned that the academy once carried out an authenticity appraisal of a letter written by Marx in 1872, and also helped solve the problem of tracing the origins of the remains of Petőfi in Hungary. Through multidisciplinary joint appraisal, it helped confirm the identity of a fish suspected to be a Chinese sturgeon, promoting the introduction of relevant protection and management regulations.
