The Ministry of Water Resources recently released the 2025 edition of the "China Water Resources Bulletin," announcing the latest data on the country's water resources, water supply, and water use. According to the bulletin, China's total water resources in 2025 amounted to 2,722.93 billion cubic meters, including 2,603.40 billion cubic meters of surface water resources and 810.56 billion cubic meters of groundwater resources. The nonoverlapping amount of groundwater and surface water resources was 119.53 billion cubic meters. In terms of water use structure, total water consumption nationwide in 2025 was 594.45 billion cubic meters. Agriculture accounted for the largest share at 62.0%; domestic water use accounted for 15.8%, industrial water use 16.0%, and supplemental water for artificial ecological environments 6.2%. Compared with 2024, total water consumption nationwide increased by 1.65 billion cubic meters, with agricultural and domestic water use increasing more significantly, while industrial water use declined. The bulletin also showed that in 2025, water use per 10,000 yuan of GDP and water use per 10,000 yuan of industrial added value nationwide fell by 4.5% and 7.2%, respectively, from the previous year, reflecting a continued improvement in wateruse efficiency.
