Former SNU President Cho Wan-kyu Passes Away

Former Seoul National University President Cho Wankyu passed away on the 13th. He was 98 years old. He is regarded as a figure who laid the foundation for Korea's basic science and scientific administration, having served as Minister of Education and the inaugural president of the Korea Academy of Science and Technology. The deceased graduated from the Department of Biology and the graduate school of Seoul National University, and devoted himself to research and education at Seoul National University for a long time. Even in the poor research environment immediately after the Korean War, he continued research in basic biology and achieved numerous results related to developmental biology in Korea. He was also deeply involved in cultivating researchers and science policy. He contributed to the development of science and education systems by leading the enactment of the Biotechnology Promotion Act, founding the Korea Bio Industry Association, attracting the International Vaccine Institute to Korea, and promoting Seoul National University's autonomy and educational reform.
