The Ministry of Water Resources Releases 2025 National Water Consumption Data

The Ministry of Water Resources recently released the China Water Conservation Report 2025 in both Chinese and English for the first time. The report shows that China’s total water consumption in 2025 was 594.45 billion cubic meters, with agriculture, industry, domestic use, and artificial ecological environment replenishment accounting for the main shares, and the wateruse structure continuing to improve. The report points out that in 2025, water consumption per 10,000 yuan of GDP and water consumption per 10,000 yuan of industrial value added nationwide continued to decline from the previous year, the effective utilization coefficient of farmland irrigation water increased, and the reuse rate of water in industrial enterprises above designated size remained at a relatively high level, reflecting the continuous improvement of wateruse efficiency in China. The Ministry of Water Resources also said that in 2025, institutional development was continuously advanced in areas such as the rigid constraints on water resources, watersaving systems and policies, water budgeting management, water quota management, reclaimed water use, and watersaving publicity and education, and watersaving production and lifestyle practices were further established in various places. The report also released watersaving achievements and key measures for several major national strategic regions and all provinces.
