The 'superblock' redevelopment approach emerging as the key to Bundang reconstruction

Starting on July 1, applications for the selection of the 2nd Special Maintenance District will begin in Bundang New Town. As complexes that moved in during the early to mid1990s pass the 30year mark and redevelopment gains momentum, experts believe integrated renewal on the level of a broader living zone, rather than individual complexes, is necessary. The article explains that to solve traffic congestion, aging infrastructure, and education issues together, the socalled “superblock” approach, which groups multiple complexes together, is effective. If road expansion, introduction of BRT, expansion of water and sewage systems, and enhancement of cultural and welfare infrastructure are each carried out separately by complex, the effect may be limited, so broadarea redevelopment aligned with nearby complexes and timing is needed. Experts suggest dividing Bundang’s station areas into highdensity development, while residential 중심 areas should be designed to be pedestrianfriendly, and that arterial roads and public transit transfer systems should also be reorganized in a multidimensional way. They also pointed out that, given the regional characteristic of shared school districts, without measures that coordinate relocation timing, problems of school overcrowding and underenrollment may arise, making renewal plans that consider the educational environment important.
