On the 23rd, the day before the Chuseok holiday period, holiday traffic began to build up on highways across the country as vehicles heading to hometowns caused congestion. Korea Expressway Corporation predicted that it could take up to 7 hours and 30 minutes from Seoul to Busan, 6 hours and 50 minutes from Seoul to Gwangju, and 7 hours and 20 minutes from Seoul to Mokpo.
About 6.13 million vehicles were expected to travel that day, with 510,000 vehicles moving from the Seoul metropolitan area to the provinces and 450,000 vehicles traveling from the provinces to the Seoul metropolitan area. On major sections such as the Gyeongbu Line, Jungbu Naeryuk Line, Jungbu Line, and PyeongtaekJaecheon Line, congestion stretching over several dozen kilometers continued as of the afternoon.
Korea Expressway Corporation explained that congestion in the direction of the provinces would peak from the morning and could continue until tomorrow. Congestion in the direction of Seoul was expected to be heaviest in the morning and ease by the night of the following day.
