Controversy is continuing over whether the police's initial investigation was sufficient in connection with the murder of a high school girl in Gwangju. The police said they apprehended the suspect, Jang Yoongi, 11 hours after the incident and carried out all possible investigative measures, including a search and seizure of the vehicle, forensic analysis of the mobile phone, and analysis of communication and financial records. However, the legal community points out that the evidence and analysis additionally secured by the prosecution through supplementary investigation were substantial. The argument is that a broader review should have been conducted, including securing the dashcam storage device and cable ties, checking longterm communication and financial records, and conducting interviews with the autopsy doctor and integrated psychological analysis, to consider the possibility of a sexual motive more extensively. This controversy is also leading to concerns that, even after the prosecution's supplementary investigation authority was abolished, inadequate police investigative capability could result in repeated allegations of sloppy investigations. The legal community stressed that conducting an investigation and fully uncovering the nature of a case are different, emphasizing the importance of setting the direction of an initial investigation and interpreting evidence.
