Wang Yi Meets UN Secretary-General Candidate Espinosa

On June 30, Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Foreign Minister, met in Beijing with the candidate for the next UN SecretaryGeneral, former President of the UN General Assembly, and former Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Espinosa. Espinosa said that the current international community needs a United Nations that can prevent crises more promptly, strengthen coordination and cooperation, and act efficiently, and stressed her willingness to work with all parties to advance the development of the UN's three pillars, focus on development issues, and uphold multilateralism as well as the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Wang Yi said that the Chinese side supports multilateralism and the development of the UN cause, and believes that the candidate for the next UN SecretaryGeneral should abide by the Charter, possess competence, be fair and upright, and have a sense of responsibility. China will participate in the election process with a responsible attitude, support the UN in enhancing its authority and vitality, and better play its role in global governance.
