The Democratic Party of Korea’s Aug. 17 party convention race for party leader has been finalized as a fiveway contest among Kim Minseok, Jung Chungrae, Song Younggil, Ko Minjung, and Kim Bomi. The party’s central election management committee announced the registration results on the 17th, the deadline for candidate registration.
A total of 14 people, including Rep. Lee Sungyoon, have entered the race for the Supreme Council. The Democratic Party plans to narrow the field to three party leader candidates and eight Supreme Council candidates through the preliminary round on the 21st.
Observers say the newly introduced onepersononevote system and preferential voting system could be variables in the party leader election at this convention. The preliminary round for party leader will reflect votes from central committee members and party members with voting rights, as well as public opinion polling, while the main round will determine the final result by combining votes from delegates and party members with voting rights with public opinion polling.
