As severe heat waves continued to grip the southern regions over the weekend, the daytime temperature in Yangsan, South Gyeongsang Province, rose to 42.5 degrees Celsius on the 2nd, breaking the highest temperature ever recorded in Korea's weather observations. Yangsan broke its alltime high temperature for three consecutive days, and Gwangyang, Busan, and Miryang also exceeded 40 degrees.
The Ministry of the Interior and Safety activated Level 2 of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters in response to the prolonged heat wave. This is the first time in about three years, since August 2023, that Level 2 of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters has been operated due to a heat wave, and the second time since heat waves were included among natural disasters in 2018.
The Korea Meteorological Administration explained that after the rainy season ended, the Tibetan High and the North Pacific High covered the Korean Peninsula, and the heat wave intensified as warm, humid winds from the west kept flowing in. In particular, Yangsan was analyzed to have experienced even higher temperatures due to the Foehn phenomenon and the influence of its basin topography. The KMA forecast that starting on the 4th, the center of the heat wave could shift to western regions, including the Seoul metropolitan area.
