Ahn Cheol-soo and the Democratic Party Clash Over Semiconductor Investment in Honam

On the 27th, the ruling and opposition parties clashed strongly over the review of investment in semiconductor facilities in Honam by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix. People Power Party lawmaker Ahn Cheolsoo argued that the government's demand for investment in a specific region constituted abuse of authority, and said an explanation was needed regarding the legal basis and process. Floor leader Jeong Cheolsik also called for a transparent disclosure of how Gwangju and South Jeolla were chosen as the site for the semiconductor cluster. The Democratic Party of Korea countered that this was the spread of false information. Floor spokesperson Lee Joohee said that the companies' review of the investment was in line with a policy stance aimed at responding to regional extinction and strengthening the competitiveness of hightech industries, and that the president did not force the investment. The Democratic Party also announced that it would file a complaint over Ahn's remarks.
