Check the key issues in handling the special prosecutor bill and reactions from the political sphere
The People Power Party and the New Reform Party strongly criticized the special counsel bill proposed by the Democratic Party of Korea, titled the “Special Counsel Act to Investigate the Truth Behind the Fabricated Prosecutions of the Yoon Suk Yeol Administration.” They argued that the bill could shake up the judicial system by granting the special counsel the authority to dismiss indictments in cases already under trial.
The People Power Party also said it would launch a filibuster if the bill comes to a plenary session of the National Assembly. Choi Soojin, the People Power Party’s chief floor spokesperson, pointed out that a special counsel funded by taxpayers’ money could be used as a means to block a particular person’s trial, and chief spokesperson Park Sunghoon also said granting the power to dismiss indictments was a dangerous idea.
Assemblyman Sung Iljong and Seoul Mayor Oh Sehoon also criticized the Democratic Party, while Lee Junseok, leader of the New Reform Party, argued that the very structure in which the president appoints a special counsel is the problem. The Democratic Party plans to handle the special counsel bill within this month.
