Beijing, September 11 — The Fifth Symposium of the Supreme People's Court International Commercial Expert Committee and the renewal ceremony for expert committee members were recently held, with the application of artificial intelligence in the judicial field becoming the focus of discussion. Chinese and foreign legal scholars and legal experts attending the event discussed the theme of "Integrated Rule of Law · Collaborative Innovation · IntelligentLinking the World," focusing on the role and boundaries of AI in the resolution of international commercial disputes.
Many participants believed that artificial intelligence has already shown practical value in improving efficiency, assisting adjudication, and reducing costs. Courts in Shanghai have been advancing the construction of digital courts and piloting an AIassisted trial system, trying to combine big data analysis, digital modeling, and trial experience to provide judges with support such as knowledge graph recommendations, early warning alerts, and review and supervision.
At the same time, experts also reminded that the use of AI in the judiciary must place importance on ethics, procedural fairness, and accountability. The meeting mentioned that issues such as AIgenerated incorrect citations and impacts on independence and confidentiality have already drawn attention in individual cases. The Supreme People's Court recently issued opinions on disputes involving artificial intelligence, proposing principles such as adhering to a peoplecentered approach, supporting innovative development, and strengthening security defenses, thereby defining legal boundaries for related practice.
