Park Sun-won Calls for Yong Hye-in to Resign Her Proportional Representation Lawmaker Seat
A summary of the controversy over Yong Hye-in's resignation from her proportional representation seat and the issue of whether to retain a lawmaker seat when taking a ministerial post Take a look at the Democratic Party's internal position and the political sphere's reactions at a glance
Park Sunwon, a Supreme Council member of the Democratic Party of Korea, said on the 1st that Yoon Hyein, a lawmaker of the Basic Income Party who has been nominated for Minister of the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, should resign from her proportional representation seat in the National Assembly.
In a radio interview, Park said that because the next in line for the proportional representation seat is already registered with the National Election Commission, it is right to give up the lawmaker position if one takes the ministerial post. He also pointed out that Yoon, in stating that she has no intention of resigning, is speaking as if there is no next person in line.
He added that since proportional representation lawmakers are positions that represent occupations and sectors rather than specific regions, if one has been nominated as a ministerial candidate, one should seriously consider whether to retain the lawmaker seat. Shin Hyeonyoung, a Democratic Party spokesperson, also said in a separate post that she opposed holding both a lawmaker seat and a ministerial post at the same time and that one of the two must be chosen.
