The number of casualties continues to rise from the earthquake that hit Venezuela hard. As of the 25th, the death toll was at least 235, and the total number of people buried and missing was estimated to be over 350.
The United States decided to send rescue teams from Virginia and California, and to provide $150 million to relief organizations such as the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The U.S. Southern Command has also dispatched commanders to Caracas and even deployed naval vessels to support relief operations.
France, Germany, the Holy See, Iran, and others have also begun assisting with search and recovery efforts. This disaster has raised a new issue of how much responsibility the United States, which has effectively managed Venezuela economically, will bear for future relief and reconstruction costs.
