Zhongguancun Two Academies Enterprises Explore Controlled Nuclear Fusion with Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence empowers controlled nuclear fusion research, improving plasma diagnosis, prediction, and control See how AI helps EAST breakthroughs and fusion commercialization, accelerating new progress in energy technology

On June 11, reporters joined the 2026 "Vibrant China Research Tour" Beijingthemed coverage and visited Beijing Zhongguancun Academy and the Zhongguancun Institute of Artificial Intelligence to learn how local companies are applying artificial intelligence to controlled nuclear fusion research. The relevant teams introduced that they are following a "physics + data" technical approach, combining methods such as reinforcement learning, generative models, and selfevolving agents to try to improve capabilities in rapid plasma diagnostics, state prediction, and instability control, in support of fusion experiments and engineering applications. The report noted that China's EAST device has already achieved highconfinementmode plasma operation at 100 million degrees Celsius for 1,066 seconds. Interviewees believe that, as AI and energy technologies develop in synergy, artificial intelligence is expected to help fusion research gradually shift from relying on trial and error based on experience to intelligent prediction and active regulation, accelerating the progress of related technologies toward stable commercialization.
