China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to Japan's overseas launch of an offensive missile. According to reports, on May 6, Japan's Type 88 coastal antiship missile was launched during the U.S.Philippines "Balikatan" military exercise, which is seen as Japan's first launch of an offensive missile outside its territory since World War II.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a regular press conference that, on the one hand, Japan has been dispatching military forces overseas under the guise of socalled "security cooperation"; on the other hand, it is launching offensive missiles. This reflects that rightwing forces in Japan are pushing Japan to accelerate its "remilitarization."
Lin Jian also pointed out that Japan's relevant actions have continuously broken through the constraints of "exclusively defenseoriented defense" as well as international law and domestic law, and have already gone beyond the scope of "selfdefense." He warned that its trend toward "new militarism" may pose a threat to peace and stability in the region.
