Prime Minister Kim Minseok criticized the senior leadership of the National Election Commission, saying they bear major responsibility for the ballot shortage incident that surfaced during the June 3 local elections, and stated that, depending on the case, an investigation, a parliamentary inquiry, and even a special prosecutor could be possible.
On the 7th, Kim met with representatives of university student councils at the Government Complex Seoul in Seoul and said the incident was "unthinkable," adding that the truth needs to be uncovered. He said he had already requested an investigation from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, and also conveyed his intention to take all necessary measures within the scope permitted by law.
Kim also referred to the NEC's moral and administrative responsibility, saying the resignation of senior officials may be necessary, and explained that, to reduce controversy over fairness, a parliamentary inquiry or special prosecutor may also be appropriate. However, he said that whether a byelection will be held and how to remedy the infringement of voting rights require further discussion.
