President Lee Jaemyung held his first summit since taking office with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Ankara, Türkiye, on the 8th. The two leaders met for about 43 minutes on the occasion of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization summit and discussed ways to support and cooperate with Ukraine.
The South Korean government promised comprehensive support worth $100 million to Ukraine. However, it said it would not include support for lethal weapons and stated that it would cooperate with the international community, focusing on humanitarian aid and recovery and reconstruction assistance.
The two leaders also discussed the issue of North Korean soldiers held as prisoners in Ukraine. The South Korean government said they agreed to respect the free will of the parties involved and resolve the matter in a way that conforms to international law and humanitarian principles.
