Two weeks since Kang Hoon-sik tendered his resignation, the Presidential Office is deliberating over the appointment of a successor chief of staff
The selection of the Presidential Chief of Staff is now in full swing, with consideration of a successor who combines reform-mindedness and political acuity A careful choice that also takes into account the variable of the National Assembly audit is being made, and attention is focused on the timing of the announcement
President Lee Jaemyung is continuing to carefully review the appointment of a successor following Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoonsik’s expression of intent to step down. The Presidential Office appears focused on finding someone with a reformist image who can restore momentum in state affairs, as well as a political figure who can bridge the ruling camp.
Among the candidates being mentioned are close aides who have assisted the president from nearby, senior politicians within the ruling camp, and proMoon Jaein figures. However, if a sitting lawmaker is selected, having to vacate their district seat, along with the National Assembly audit schedule, are also cited as variables affecting the appointment.
Some also speculate that if the announcement of a successor is delayed, Chief of Staff Kang could remain in the post on a temporary basis until after the audit. The Presidential Office is publicly maintaining its stance that the matter is under review while coordinating the timing of the appointment.
