Seoul city bus labor-management negotiations break down... possibility of a strike from the first bus on the 16th
A commute-time chaos is feared as wage negotiations for the Seoul city bus strike break down. Check subway service increases and shuttle measures, and make your travel plans in advance.
The wage negotiations between Seoul city bus unions and management effectively broke down on the 15th, increasing the likelihood that the union will go on strike starting with the first buses at 4 a.m. on the 16th.
The Seoul City Bus Workers' Union held a second mediation meeting with the Bus Transport Business Association at the Seoul Regional Labor Relations Commission on the day, but failed to reach an agreement and is reported to have subsequently decided on a strike. However, it also said it would wait for any additional proposal until midnight, when the legal mediation period ends.
This conflict stemmed from the labor and management sides failing to narrow their differences over the 기준 for calculating ordinary wages that reflect regular bonuses. There are about 7,000 city buses in Seoul, and with an average of 3.8 million passengers using them each day, if the strike becomes a reality, public inconvenience is expected to be significant. The Seoul Metropolitan Government has prepared emergency transport measures, including free shuttle buses and increased subway service.
