A New Domestic Button Mushroom Variety, “Longgu No. 1,” Bred at the Foot of the Qilian Mountains

After 7 years of dedicated research, the team from the Key Laboratory of Edible Mushroom Genetic Breeding of Gansu Province at Hexi University successfully bred Gansu’s first independently selected and bred Agaricus bisporus variety, "Longgu No. 1." The achievement was completed under the leadership of Professor Liang Qianqian, marking a shift in the local edible mushroom industry from relying on introduced varieties to independent breeding. Reports show that the team has long conducted indepth fungal resource surveys in the Qilian Mountains, identifying a total of 760 fungal species and 252 edible mushroom species, and has established a related protection system. Faced with challenges such as the difficulty of domesticating wild Agaricus bisporus and the scarcity of strains that can grow stably, the researchers ultimately got the new variety approved at the provincial level through extensive sample screening and repeated experiments. Thirdparty testing results show that "Longgu No. 1" outperforms some imported varieties in terms of protein content, total amino acids, yield, and disease resistance. At the same time, the team has also promoted the new variety to places such as Zhangye, Wuwei, and Xinjiang, established demonstration bases and scienceandtechnology stations, driven technical training, enterprise cooperation, and income growth for farmers, and helped upgrade特色 agriculture in the northwest’s cold and arid regions.
