The cleaning process for a clogged washing equipment pipe is being cited as the cause of the explosion at Hanwha Aerospace's Daejeon plant.
Police, along with statements from a person at the level of the onsite work supervisor, are examining the possibility that the accident occurred while scraping off powder residue or sludge that had built up inside the pipe. At the accident site, related tools and residue were also secured, and forensic analysis by the National Forensic Service is underway.
Investigators are also checking whether this task was included in the standard operating procedures, and whether the pipe cleaning that had been handled by an outside contractor was instead carried out directly by onsite workers. Police and the labor office are investigating the circumstances of the accident, keeping multiple possibilities open.
