Former President Park Geunhye made public for the first time in 52 years a letter her father, former President Park Chunghee, sent to his daughter on August 17, 1974, two days after the assassination attempt on Yuk Youngsoo. The letter was released through People Power Party lawmaker Yoo Youngha and was introduced amid recent controversy over a film accused of distorting the history surrounding the attack on Mrs. Yuk.
In the letter, former President Park Chunghee expressed deep sorrow, writing, “Your mother took the bullet that was meant for your father.” He urged former President Park Geunhye, who was 22 at the time, “Now you must take your mother’s place,” and described Yuk Youngsoo as “a great mother as a female leader of this country.”
Lawmaker Yoo said the letter contains former President Park Chunghee’s grief and feelings, and called on the film’s production team to take responsible measures, including an apology for defamation and halting screenings. It is reported that former President Park Geunhye received this letter at Tokyo Airport in Japan while hastily returning home from studying in France at the time.
