Democratic Party cancels late-night Supreme Council meeting to discuss preferential voting system

The Democratic Party of Korea canceled a latenight Supreme Council meeting that had been scheduled to discuss whether to introduce a preferential voting system in the party leader election at the Aug. 17 national convention.
Han Byungdo, acting party leader and floor leader, told reporters at the National Assembly on the evening of the 10th that the meeting could not be held that day because further discussion was needed. Earlier that morning, the Democratic Party had discussed the rules for the national convention at a Supreme Council meeting, but failed to reach a conclusion due to differences in position among factions.
Within the party, proLee and proChung factions are at odds over the interpretation of the preferential voting system and the runoff voting method. With the meeting canceled, observers say the likelihood has increased that the conflict over the convention rules will continue.
