Guangzhou’s first mangrove carbon sink project completes its initial issuance
The first-phase emission reduction credits from Guangzhou’s mangrove carbon sink project have been issued, promoting blue carbon trading and ecological restoration 1,251 tons of carbon inclusive emission reductions will be brought to market, with the proceeds reinvested into maintenance and conservation, helping ensure ongoing protection
Guangzhou's first mangrove carbon sink project recently completed the issuance of its firstphase emission reductions, totaling 1,251 tons of carboninclusive emission reductions, including 554 tons from afforestation carbon sinks and 697 tons from restoration carbon sinks. The relevant emission reductions will subsequently be traded through the Guangzhou Carbon Emissions Exchange, and the proceeds will be used for the followup maintenance and ecological restoration of the mangroves.
The project is located in the Guangzhou Nansha Wetland. During the 14th FiveYear Plan period, the local area has continuously advanced mangrove planting and restoration, completing 43.3 hectares of planting and 65.4 hectares of ecological restoration, and improving ecosystem stability and carbon sequestration capacity through the screening of suitable tree species and community construction.
Relevant Guangzhou municipal departments said the project is based on a specially developed mangrove carboninclusive methodology and has undergone thirdparty verification and certification, forming a circular model of "ecological restoration — carbon sink development — value conversion — sustained protection," providing a practical example for the protection and utilization of blue carbon resources.
