Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on June 3 that China has consistently opposed all forms of unilateral tariff measures, and stressed that tariff wars and trade wars serve no one's interests.
At the regular press briefing that day, a reporter mentioned that the Trump administration had proposed imposing additional tariffs on imports from 60 economies, including China, at rates of 10% or 12.5%. Mao Ning responded that economic and trade issues should be resolved through dialogue and consultation on the basis of equality, respect, and mutual benefit.
This statement reflects China's position on the U.S. tariff proposal, namely that the relevant disagreements should be brought back onto the track of negotiations to avoid further escalation of trade frictions.
