On July 2, Chen Junwu was awarded the “July 1 Medal.” This Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences devoted himself to the petroleum and petrochemical field for many years, witnessing and promoting the development of China’s catalytic cracking technology from its early stage to maturity, and made important contributions to the progress of the refining industry.
Chen Junwu began working at the Fushun Mining Bureau Synthetic Oil Plant in 1949, and later was assigned to oversee the design of China’s first fluid catalytic cracking unit. In 1965, the relevant unit was completed and put into operation, playing an important role in improving domestic gasoline supply capacity.
In addition to tackling technical challenges in the petroleum and petrochemical sector, Chen Junwu also took part in scientific research on coalbased methanol to olefins in his later years, and proposed research findings on carbon emission reduction and adjustments to the energy structure, providing a reference for the formulation of related policies.
