Discussion on Differential Application of the Minimum Wage by Industry Gains Momentum

Discussion on differential application of the minimum wage by industry, a key issue in next year’s minimum wage negotiations Quickly check the gap between labor and management positions and outlook, and read the course of deliberations

On the 16th, the Minimum Wage Commission held its 6th plenary session at the Government Complex Sejong and discussed whether next year’s minimum wage should be applied differently by industry. The business community argued that the situation of industries with heavy laborcost burdens, such as food and accommodation services, should be taken into account, while the labor side opposed it, saying it could lead to discrimination against workers in specific industries. Only after this discussion is settled is a fullscale negotiation over next year’s minimum wage level expected to begin, and as differences between labor and management are wide, the deliberations may continue until next month.
