The party election committee of the Democratic Party has decided to reconsider the increase in the preliminary primary deposit for young candidates, which was raised fourfold from last year, ahead of the party convention.
Inside and outside the party, criticism continued that the burden on young candidates was excessive, and President Lee Jaemyung also mentioned that they should consider ways to roll back the increase in the deposit.
The Democratic Party’s election committee plans to discuss the deposit issue again at a plenary meeting on the 21st, and options such as the party covering the deposit for young figures under 39 who are not in office are expected to be reviewed. The committee explained that it raised the deposit to reflect costs such as text messages sent to guide members as the number of party members increased, but there were criticisms within the party that this could raise barriers to entry for young people in politics.
