Draft White Paper on Smart Observatory Released for Public Comment in Haixi, Qinghai

The Chinese and English versions of the "White Paper on Intelligent Observatories (Draft for Comments)" were released on August 5 at the Second Open Science Conference on Astronomy Empowered by Artificial Intelligence, held in Haixi Mongol and Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai Province. The white paper was led by Liu Jifeng, Director of the National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and was jointly initiated and compiled by the National Astronomical Observatories and the ZJ LAB.
The white paper consists of six parts and mainly discusses how artificial intelligence can support the nextgeneration astronomical observation system, including processing massive, multimodal astronomical data and enabling distributed telescopes with autonomous response, intelligent decisionmaking, and collaborative observation capabilities. Relevant researchers said that an intelligent observatory is not simply a fully automated telescope, but rather a system that uses AI to connect the links of observation, data processing, and scientific research analysis.
The white paper also proposes that, based on the highquality site conditions and telescope cluster foundation of Lenghu in Qinghai, it is expected that a worldclass intelligent observation network can be built in the future to support cuttingedge research on transient sources, nearEarth objects, and more, while promoting the global sharing of astronomical resources. The compilers said that this document is still the firstversion framework, and it will still need to be continuously tested and improved in real observations.
