News from Huizhou, Guangdong shows that Unit 2 of the CGN Guangdong Taipingling Nuclear Power Project officially began generating electricity at 11:18 a.m. on August 3, marking the full completion and commissioning of Phase I of the GuangdongHong KongMacao Greater Bay Area's first independently developed thirdgeneration nuclear power project using Hualong One. The project is located in Huidong County, Huizhou City. Phase I received national approval in 2019, and construction of Unit 2 began in October 2020. During construction, the team completed key milestones including main works in the nuclear island, equipment installation and commissioning, nuclear fuel loading, first criticality, and grid connection for power generation, with continuous improvements in engineering quality, safety management, and construction efficiency. The report also noted that during construction, the project advanced a number of technological improvements and digitalintelligent applications, including modular construction, smart construction site management, a digital command center, and the deployment of related intelligent equipment. Based on the average utilization hours of nuclear power plants in mainland China, after the two units are put into operation, annual power generation is expected to exceed 18 billion kWh, providing more clean energy for the GuangdongHong KongMacao Greater Bay Area and reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
