Hefei Rolls Off the World's Largest Superconducting Magnet for a Fusion Reactor

The world's largest superconducting magnet for a fusion reactor has passed acceptance in Hefei, with 100% domestically developed core technology With a total weight of 582 tons and energy storage of 120 gigajoules, it will help China's "artificial sun" move faster toward practical application

The toroidalfield superconducting magnet developed by the Institute of Plasma Physics, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, passed comprehensive acceptance by an expert panel in Hefei on June 27, becoming the largest fusion reactor superconducting magnet in the world to date. On the same day, the hightemperature superconducting central solenoid coil also completed fullcondition parameter testing. Reports show that these two key superconducting magnets for fusion reactors are both part of the "artificial sun" project, with core technologies having achieved 100% domestic production, and their overall performance ranking among the world’s leading levels. The magnet is 21 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 3.3 meters high, with a total weight of 582 tons, an operating current of 98 kiloamperes, and total stored energy of 120 gigajoules. Related progress is seen as providing an important superconducting engineering foundation for China’s subsequent fusion reactor construction, while also enhancing its independent R&D and engineering construction capabilities.
