North Korean prisoners of war repatriation controversy, South Korean government strongly protests to Ukraine Quickly check the background of the Foreign Ministry's summons and concerns over damage to ROK-Ukraine trust
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned Andrii Beskhyn, acting ambassador of Ukraine to South Korea, on the 28th and conveyed the South Korean government's position on the issue of the repatriation of North Korean soldiers.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, First Vice Foreign Minister Park Yoonjoo pointed out that although South Korea and Ukraine had agreed not to disclose the relevant details to the public, the Ukrainian side had unilaterally announced at the UN General Assembly on the 23rd that the North Korean prisoners of war would be sent to South Korea. She also expressed strong regret over the false statement issued by the Office of the President of Ukraine later, implying that there had been no confidential agreement.
Vice Minister Park emphasized that such disclosures and statements could undermine trust between the two countries and affect their friendly relations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that it had requested an official explanation and apology from the Ukrainian government, as well as measures to prevent a recurrence. Acting Ambassador Beskhyn is said to have responded that he would accurately report South Korea's position to his home country.
