The State Council approves Weifang City as a National Historic and Cultural City

The State Council recently issued an approval, agreeing to designate Weifang City, Shandong Province, as a National Historic and Cultural City. The approval noted that Weifang has a long history and deep cultural heritage, is relatively rich in cultural heritage resources, preserves its traditional layout and historical appearance well, and has important historical and cultural value. The approval requires Shandong Province and Weifang City to strengthen the protection and utilization of historical and cultural heritage, systematically carry out investigations of cultural relic resources and research of historical materials, clarify protection principles, priorities, and responsibilities, and formulate and implement a protection plan for the historic and cultural city as well as related cultural relic protection plans. At the same time, relevant departments are also required to properly handle the relationship between urban construction and cultural heritage protection, improve the cultural relic protection system, strengthen holistic and systematic protection, and promote the restoration of historic and cultural districts, the repair of immovable cultural relics and historic buildings, as well as the activation and utilization of cultural relics. The approval was signed on July 21, 2026.
