Ahead of the Democratic Party leadership election, former party leader Jung Chungrae and former Prime Minister Kim Minseok visited the Honam region one after another over the weekend, strengthening local public sentiment.
Former leader Jung visited the birthplace of former President Kim Daejung on Haui Island in Sinan County, South Jeolla Province, and emphasized the values of democracy, human rights, and peace on the Korean Peninsula. He also said he intended to think and act like former President Kim.
Former Prime Minister Kim spent the weekend in Iksan, North Jeolla Province, and presented a vision for the development of North Jeolla and the region. He noted that investment in Saemangeum and the region's culture, healthcare, and education must grow together, and emphasized the potential for Iksan and North Jeolla to make a leap forward.
Honam is a region with a large proportion of Democratic Party duespaying members and is considered a key battleground in the August party convention. Another party leadership contender, lawmaker Song Younggil, is also expected to visit Honam soon.
