China's National Health Commission: Healthy weight management is not a matter of the lighter, the better

For healthy weight management, do not pursue rapid drastic weight loss; beware of the risks of dieting and high-intensity training Scientific weight loss is safer. Pay attention to the National Health Commission's recommendations, and consult an outpatient clinic as early as possible if necessary

The National Health Commission of China held a press conference in Beijing on the 23rd. Spokesperson Hu Qiangqiang said that the public should not blindly pursue "the lighter, the better" or shortterm rapid weight loss when managing their weight. Hu Qiangqiang mentioned that some recent weightloss training camps have attracted trainees with slogans such as "rapid extreme fat loss" and "refund if you don't lose weight," but in practice they may reduce weight through excessive dieting, overtraining, and other methods, and may even cause safety incidents. Some institutions also have problems such as insufficient health assessments, incomplete emergency support, and a lack of qualified coaches. The National Health Commission reminds the public that healthy weight management should be based on a reasonable diet, appropriate exercise, and a healthy lifestyle. Excessive dieting or highintensity exercise may bring risks such as dehydration, hair loss, electrolyte imbalance, and muscle loss, and for some people may also increase risks related to cardiovascular disease. The Commission also recommends that people with underlying conditions such as cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases or metabolic diseases manage their weight under the guidance of professionals; if symptoms such as chest tightness, palpitations, dizziness, or obvious fatigue occur during training, they should stop immediately and seek medical attention promptly. At present, more than 95% of tertiary public general hospitals have set up outpatient clinics for healthy weight management, and the relevant groups may go there for consultation.
