Petition calling for the Gyeonggi Governor’s resignation surpasses 10,000 participants
Gyeonggi Provincial Office petition: calls for Choo Mi-ae’s resignation and controversy over austerity finances spread With the 10,000-person petition requirement met, attention turns to the governor’s official response and future measures
A petition calling for the resignation of Gyeonggi Province Governor Choo Miae on the Gyeonggi Provincial Government petition board has surpassed 10,000 participants, meeting the requirement for an official response. The petition began as a backlash over the fact that, while Gyeonggi Province was reducing budgets for several projects due to fiscal austerity, it also signed a lease for an official residence with a large security deposit.
The petitioner criticized the declaration of a fiscal crisis, expenditure restructuring, and cuts to civil servant incentives, arguing that the provincial administration is negatively affecting residents' lives. Gyeonggi Province, meanwhile, explained its existing budget allocation structure and financial conditions, and stated that the petition's claims are not true.
A Gyeonggi Province petition requires the governor to respond within 30 days if participation exceeds 10,000 people. Accordingly, Governor Choo must officially respond to the petition, and the controversy surrounding fiscal austerity is expected to continue for the time being.
