Xi Jinping Meets with Guterres: Support UN Reform and Multilateralism, Deepen Global Cooperation Focus on Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence, Oppose Unilateralism, Jointly Address Challenges Such as Climate Change
On the afternoon of July 17, President Xi Jinping met with UN SecretaryGeneral Guterres at the Shanghai West Suburban Guest House, who was visiting China to attend the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference and the HighLevel Meeting on Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence.
Xi Jinping said that over the 10 years since Guterres took office as UN SecretaryGeneral, he has played an important role in upholding multilateralism, addressing climate change, and advancing global governance in emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, and that China highly appreciates this. He pointed out that this year marks the 55th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People's Republic of China in the United Nations, and that China will continue to support the United Nations and deepen cooperation with it.
Xi Jinping also stressed that, amid complex and changing international circumstances, the international community has an even greater need to uphold genuine multilateralism, safeguard the authority of the United Nations, respect the sovereignty and legitimate rights and interests of all countries, and promote UN reform and global cooperation to jointly address global challenges. Guterres said that the United Nations will continue to strengthen cooperation with China, oppose unilateralism and protectionism, uphold the UN Charter and international law, and advance the process of world multipolarization.
