China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded to the controversy over Taiwanrelated issues at the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea, stating that China has made a solemn démarche to the Korean side regarding the organizer's improper actions. Spokesperson Guo Jiakun pointed out that the communique on the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea clearly embodies the One China principle, and the Korean side has also stated many times that this position has not changed. However, the organizer of this Biennale allowed Taiwan, China to participate under a name that does not conform to its status, which China believes violates the One China principle. China stated that the Democratic Progressive Party authorities' political manipulation and promotion of "Taiwan independence" provocations by exploiting cultural exchanges and exhibition events will not succeed, and it hopes that the South Korean government will abide by its political commitments and take practical actions to uphold the One China principle.
