U.S. House Report Raises Controversy Over Korean Government Regulation of Coupang

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee has released a report claiming that the South Korean government’s platform regulations and sanctions against Coupang are discriminatory measures aimed at U.S. companies. The report pointed out that the South Korean government’s investigation and imposition of fines following Coupang’s personal information leak incident were excessive, and also took issue with the Fair Trade Commission’s regulatory enforcement and the Online Platform Act. In particular, it focused heavily on the section about Coupang, claiming that the South Korean government tried to discourage business activity. On the other hand, the South Korean government expressed regret, saying the report was onesided and reflected only Coupang’s claims. The Personal Information Protection Commission had previously imposed a fine based on Coupang’s largescale personal information leak and unauthorized collection, and the government explained that it took action in accordance with laws and principles regardless of nationality.
