On June 17, the Intermediate People's Court of Xuzhou, Jiangsu Province, publicly announced in the firstinstance trial the bribery case of Yuan Guangyu, former member of the Party Leadership Group and vice president of China National Offshore Oil Corporation, finding that he had committed the crime of bribery and sentencing him to death with a twoyear reprieve, along with confiscation of all his personal property. The bribed gains and their fruits recovered will be turned over to the state treasury in accordance with the law.
Public information shows that Yuan Guangyu once held multiple positions within the CNOOC system. In 2016, he became vice president and a member of the Party Leadership Group of China National Offshore Oil Corporation, and stepped down in 2019. An official notice said he was placed under investigation in March 2025 and expelled from the Party in July of the same year.
The court found that from 2001 to 2022, Yuan Guangyu used his position to provide assistance to relevant entities and individuals in matters such as project contracting, business operations, and job adjustments, and illegally accepted property worth more than 152 million yuan in total. The court stated that, in view of his truthful confession after being taken into custody, his voluntary disclosure of some criminal facts not yet known, his guilty plea and remorse, and his active return of illicit gains, he was given a lighter punishment in accordance with the law and sentenced to death with reprieve.
