Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae Rejects Request to Re-submit Candidate for Supreme Court Justice

Refusal to re-submit Supreme Court justice candidates, conflict between Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae and the Blue House escalates Amid a constitutional debate, the appointment process may be prolonged; check the response going forward

Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Cho Heedae said on the 22nd that he would not accept the Blue House's request to renominate a candidate for Supreme Court justice. This comes 25 days after the Blue House requested the renomination of Senior Judge Son Bonggi. Chief Justice Cho explained that the request document for renomination did not sufficiently present specific reasons or constitutional grounds. He also noted that the president's acts under state law must be carried out in written form, and said it is difficult to find grounds to justify this request. The Blue House immediately expressed regret and countered that an interpretation suggesting the Supreme Court chief justice's nomination authority takes precedence over the president's appointment authority is not consistent with the Constitution. With this conflict, the issue of selecting Supreme Court justices is expected to continue for the time being, and the resolution of the vacancy is also likely to be delayed.
