A Chinese team uses space remote sensing and artificial intelligence to support the protection of global cultural heritage
Global cultural heritage remote sensing monitoring atlas released, tracking environmental changes and risks Focusing on the outcomes of the Huangshan Dialogue, helping heritage protection management and trend analysis
The Fifth UNESCO Listed Heritage and Sustainable Development Huangshan Dialogue was held in Huangshan, Anhui, from May 31 to June 1. At the meeting, the Atlas of Dynamic Remote Sensing Monitoring of Global Cultural Heritage (20202025) was released, which is used to present environmental changes, evolutionary trends, and potential disturbance risks at major cultural heritage sites around the world, providing a reference for related protection and management.
The atlas was compiled by a team from the UNESCO International Centre on Space Technologies for Natural and Cultural Heritage, which is established with support from the Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The research combines space remote sensing and artificial intelligence technologies to carry out monitoring at multiple scales, including global, intercontinental, national, and heritagesite levels.
The research team said they have built a sampling dataset for change monitoring of World Cultural Heritage sites and proposed a promptguided dualtemporal change monitoring deep learning network, which can support more refined remote sensing change identification. The team also said that in the future they will combine more domestically developed satellite data and further optimize the model to enhance the dynamic monitoring capability of global cultural heritage.
