President Lee Jaemyung has nominated Han Seongsook, Minister of SMEs and Startups, as the next candidate for Prime Minister. If she passes parliamentary confirmation, she will become the second female prime minister in 20 years, following former Prime Minister Han.
In an announcement on the 7th, Presidential Chief of Staff Kang Hoonsik said Han is the right person to lead the tasks of AI transformation and economic growth based on her experience accumulated in the IT industry and government ministries. He said Han demonstrated innovativeness and handson experience while serving as CEO of Naver and as Minister of SMEs and Startups.
Han, who was nominated, is a former journalist who built her career in the IT industry before serving as CEO of Naver, and has since been serving as the inaugural Minister of SMEs and Startups in the Lee Jaemyung administration. The government evaluates that she has achieved results in expanding exports for small and mediumsized enterprises and revitalizing the startup ecosystem.
