NIS Rebuts Content of U.S. House Report on Coupang

The National Intelligence Service said on the 2nd that the claims regarding the NIS contained in the report on Coupang released by the U.S. House Judiciary Committee are not true. The NIS explained that it did not issue any specific instructions or exert any pressure during the investigation into Coupang’s personal information leak incident, and that it held workinglevel consultations with related agencies to prevent the damage from the largescale leak from spreading. It also countered that the allegations claimed by Coupang—that it had introduced domestic security firms or led the retrieval of IT equipment—are not true. The U.S. House Judiciary Committee released a report the previous day suggesting that the South Korean government had forced Coupang’s retrieval operations in China, but the NIS said once again that it regrets the report, as it was based on Coupang’s onesided claims.
